The Texas A&M community mourns the passing of Major General Thomas G. Darling ’54, a distinguished military leader, devoted Aggie, and beloved former Commandant of the Corps of Cadets. General Darling leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of leadership, service, and unwavering commitment to Texas A&M University and the nation he proudly served.

Following an exceptional 33-year career in the United States Air Force, General Darling returned to Texas A&M in 1987 to serve as Commandant of the Corps of Cadets, a position he held with distinction until 1996. Throughout his tenure, he demonstrated a deep and abiding dedication to the university’s mission, traditions, and, most importantly, to the cadets entrusted to his leadership. He believed wholeheartedly in developing young men and women into principled leaders of character and devoted himself tirelessly to their success and growth.

General Darling’s influence on the Corps remains profound and enduring. He played a pivotal role in securing support for the Sanders Corps of Cadets Center, helping establish a facility that continues to serve generations of Aggies. His vision and leadership also transformed Corps recruiting efforts, creating a more structured and effective system that strengthened the future of the program. In recognition of his lasting impact, the Darling Corps Recruiting Company proudly bears his name.

Respected and admired by cadets, colleagues, and the Aggie family alike, General Darling exemplified selfless service, integrity, and honor in every aspect of his life. His contributions to Texas A&M, the Corps of Cadets, and the United States military will continue to inspire future generations.
