It is with profound sorrow and heartfelt sympathy that we honor the life and legacy of John Byun, the beloved Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Riverside City College, whose passing on May 8, 2026, has left the academic and performing arts communities mourning an immeasurable loss. Revered as an accomplished conductor, gifted educator, and compassionate mentor, John Byun dedicated his life to the pursuit of musical excellence and the development of generations of students whose lives were forever transformed by his guidance.
Throughout his distinguished career, John Byun became widely respected for his remarkable leadership, artistic vision, and unwavering commitment to choral music. As director of the RCC Chamber Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, he cultivated programs recognized nationally for their technical precision, emotional depth, and innovative performances. Under his direction, RCC ensembles performed at prestigious conferences and events across the United States, earning admiration from educators, musicians, and audiences alike.
A graduate of University of California, Irvine and California State University, Long Beach, John built a career rooted in discipline, artistry, and mentorship. Beyond Riverside City College, he served as a guest conductor and clinician for honor choirs and music festivals nationwide, inspiring students and educators through his passion for authentic musical expression and collaborative performance.
Colleagues and former students remember John not only for his extraordinary musical talent, but also for the kindness, encouragement, and generosity he extended to everyone around him. He believed deeply in the power of music to unite, heal, and inspire, and he devoted himself wholeheartedly to helping students discover both artistic confidence and personal growth. Many of his former students have gone on to careers in music education and performance, carrying forward the lessons and inspiration he provided.
The suddenness of his passing has brought immense grief to family, friends, students, and collaborators who cherished him both personally and professionally. Tributes shared throughout the choral community reflect the extraordinary impact he made through decades of dedication, creativity, and mentorship.
A Celebration of Life honoring John Byun will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at the Coil School of the Arts. In his memory, a student travel fund will also be established to help future RCC students experience the transformative power of music around the world.
As we mourn this tremendous loss, we also celebrate a life that enriched countless others through artistry, compassion, and education. John Byun’s legacy will continue to resonate through every voice he guided, every performance he inspired, and every life he touched. May he rest in eternal peace.
